Fire Safety House
The Gaithersburg - Washington Grove Volunteer Fire Department operates the Fire Safety House as the cornerstone of our fire and injury prevention campaign. Equipped with simulated living room, kitchen, and bedroom areas, the FSH teaches children to recognize and cope with a variety of home safety hazards in a safe, guided and supervised environment.
The tour ends with a simulated escape from a house fire. Safe, artificial smoke seeps into the room, and the smoke detectors activate to simulate an emergency situation. The children are then shown how to crawl to the door, and check it for heat. A small heater warms the door and the students learn to use an alternate escape. Practice in the "stop, drop, and roll" technique to extinguish clothing fires is featured, and the children receive coloring books and other materials to take with them.
Our new Fire Safety House was paid for with contributions from the people in our community and a generous grant from the City of Gaithersburg.
If you have an upcoming event in Montgomery County, and are interested in having the Fire Safety House there, please fill out the online request form or email the FSH Coordinator for additional information.
