Volunteering is good for a number of reasons:
- It helps you meet others in your community.
- It helps you contribute to your community's well being.
- It helps you appreciate your city.
- It helps you help others.

The basic membership requirements for Active GWGVFD membership include:
- Good moral character;
- At least 18 years old at the time of application;
- A copy of your High School diploma, GED, or equivalent;
- Completion of a comprehensive background investigation, including fingerprinting;
- A copy of your Maryland Motor Vehicle Record;
- Completion of a medical examination and urine drug screen for candidates for Operational membership only. Applicants for Administrative and Associate membership need not pass a medical exam. Applicants for Associate membership need not be high school graduates.
Applicants must complete a minimum six-month probationary period to become full members, during which they receive training from GWGVFD personnel and at the Montgomery County Public Safety Training Academy.
Every active operational volunteer is required to certify as an emergency medical technician, completing more than 170 hour college level credits after joining GWGVFD. For volunteers interested in additional training as fire fighters, another 135 hours of basic firefighting skills classes are required. Once certified to ride GWGVFD fire and rescue apparatus, GWGVFD volunteers commit to completing three, 12-hour standby shifts at one of our fire stations each month. Attendance at monthly meetings and regular training drills is required.
Your commitment is a serious to becoming a member of our volunteer department is a serious one and significant time (a desired 5 year commitment) is required. Fire and rescue service is an extremely demanding and can involve grave danger and the risk of serious injury.
